Who we are
The Scottish National Federation for the Welfare of the Blind (SNFWB) is an umbrella organisation committed to promoting equality and opportunity for people affected by serious sight loss across Scotland.
The SNFWB was formed in 1911, initially to support Home Teachers of the Blind.
For information about our work, go to the 'What we do' section.
Our membership
Our affiliated membership comes from organisations who provide services to the blind and partially sighted throughout Scotland. For example, disability groups, charities, local authorities and professional organisations.
There is no membership for individuals.
For a list of our current members, go to the members page.
Governance and management
We have an Executive Committee and a Management Committee.
The Executive Committee is made up from representatives of the affiliated members. It meets five times a year.
The Management Committee comprises five members of the Executive Committee. It meets on a regular basis to take forward Executive Committee decisions and make recommendations for discussion and ratification.
Both the Executive Committee and Management Committee are served by a part-time Secretary/Treasurer.
Committees
We also have three Standing Committees, comprising members and co-opted members, which meet on a regular basis:
- ScotsVIP: working on new legislation, perceived gaps in service provision, and other areas of common interest
- Education: working on education and training
- Universal access: working on the physical environment, access to employment, transport etc.
